Kingston, Jamaica. Friday, May 16, 2025: The South East Regional Health Authority (SERHA) will join the global community in observing World Hypertension Day on Saturday, May 17, 2025, under the theme: “Measure Your Blood Pressure Accurately, Control It, Live Longer.”
This year’s theme highlights the critical importance of accurate blood pressure monitoring
and effective management in preventing serious health conditions such as heart disease,
stroke, and kidney failure.
Hypertension, or high blood pressure commonly referred to as “the silent killer” is defined as a consistent reading of 140/90 mmHg or higher. It affects nearly one (1) in three (3) adults in Jamaica and is a leading contributor to preventable deaths nationwide. Alarmingly, national health surveys reveal that 40% of those affected are unaware of their condition.
Dr. Marius Badal, Nephrologist at Kingston Public Hospital, noted that hypertension is the
leading risk factor for heart attacks, strokes, and kidney disease. He encourages Jamaicans
to prioritize early detection and adopt healthier lifestyles.
Dr. Badal recommends the following steps to help reduce the risk of hypertension:
• Reduce salt and sodium intake
• Eat more fruits and vegetables
• Increase physical activity
• Quit smoking
• Avoid excessive alcohol consumption
• Manage stress effectively
• Visit your doctor regularly
• Take prescribed medication as directed
SERHA, through its parish health departments, continues to promote public education,
health screenings, and support services aimed at helping individuals monitor and control
their blood pressure. These efforts are part of the Authority’s broader commitment to
reducing the incidence of non-communicable diseases across the region.
As part of its community outreach, SERHA will host the "Know Your Numbers" Road Tour on Friday, May 30, 2025, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Isaac Barrant Health Centre, Hampton Court, St. Thomas. The event will offer free health services, including:
• Blood pressure checks
• Pap smears
• HPV vaccinations
• Body Mass Index (BMI) assessments
• Other general health screenings
