Oral health is an essential and integral component of overall health, and it is of significant relevance throughout the lifecycle. Oral health is about more than just a smile: oral health is about the health of the entire mouth, including the teeth, gums, hard and soft palates, linings of the mouth and throat, tongue, lips, salivary glands, chewing muscles, and upper and lower jaws.

The Federation of Dentistry International declared that “good oral health means being free of tooth decay and gum disease, as well as being free of chronic oral pain, oral cancer, birth defects such as cleft lip and palate, and other conditions that affect the mouth and throat”.

Oral health is essential to general health and well-being. A healthy mouth enables an individual to speak, eat and socialize without experiencing active disease, discomfort or embarrassment.

Oral disease can lead to bad breath, pain and tooth loss, low self-esteem, reduced quality of life, difficulty in eating and consequently, impeding the growth and development of children.
