Kingston, Jamaica Monday, November 4, 2024: The South East Regional Health Authority
(SERHA) is addressing recent concerns regarding the employment status of Public Health
Inspectors (PHIs) who have been serving in their roles for extended periods. Management will continue to meet with the union groups to discuss this matter and other related matters.
Following a thorough evaluation process, SERHA has identified only two unique cases within
the cohort of PHIs in question. These cases have undergone a comprehensive review in
accordance with government protocols and criteria for public service appointments. All
necessary evaluations have been completed, ensuring that the candidates meet the established standards and requirements. Final appointments for the Public Health Inspectors will be concluded by December 1, 2024.
While we acknowledge the challenges faced by the health sector in general, the rate of
resignation among Public Health Inspectors is not alarming when compared to other categories of healthcare professionals. The region currently has a total of 185 Public Health Inspectors across the parishes of Kingston and St. Andrew, St. Catherine, and St. Thomas. Of that number, 3.78% have resigned to date in 2024.
SERHA is committed to recruiting and retaining qualified professionals and is actively
implementing measures to stabilize our workforce. We are focused on creating an environment that supports the growth and development of our staff, ensuring we can effectively serve our communities.
