Kingston, Jamaica, Wednesday, March 12, 2025: The medical team at the Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH) successfully completed its second laparoscopic surgery on March 11, 2025, marking a major achievement in the hospital’s surgical capabilities. The procedure was facilitated by the recent acquisition of a state-of-the-art laparoscopic unit and essential disposables.

Dr. Shaun Smith, Consultant General Surgeon at PMH, explained that laparoscopic surgery, or minimally invasive surgery, involves small incisions and specialized instruments to treat conditions in the abdomen or pelvis. The benefits of this surgery include reduced postoperative pain, faster recovery, shorter hospital stays, and better aesthetic outcomes.

Dr. Smith emphasizes that laparoscopic surgery is now considered the standard of care for certain procedures. With this new capability, PMH aims to provide advanced surgical options to the residents of St. Thomas and surrounding parishes, enhancing the quality of patient care in the region.

This accomplishment is part of a broader strategic initiative of the South East Regional Health Authority (SERHA) to enhance healthcare accessibility and effectiveness across the regions.
