The Most Hon. Andrew Holness, Prime Minister and Dr. the Hon. Christopher Tufton, Minister of Health & Wellness on Wednesday (July 7, 2021), broke ground for the construction of a multipurpose building at the Bustamante Hospital for Children (BHC) to house a paediatric cardiac ward and overnight parent suite.
Participating in the ground breaking exercise were Mr. Lennox Channer, Board Chairman, National Housing Trust and Ms. Nicole Ebanks, Board Member of the National Health Fund, Mr. Orett Clarke, Director of Projects, National Health Fund, Mr. Kenneth Benjamin, Chairman of BHC Management Committee, Dr. Michelle-Ann Dawson, Senior Medical Officer, BHC and Mr. Julian Robinson, Opposition spokesman on Finance and Member of Parliament for South East St. Andrew.
The overnight suite to be built over the next two years is at a cost of approximately $120 million, will be developed by the National Housing Trust (NHT) in partnership with the National Health Fund (NHF) and South East Regional Health Authority (SERHA).
The redevelopment plan also entails expansion of ward space at the hospital to provide 100
additional beds.
During his welcome speech, Mr. Kenneth Benjamin, Chairman of BHC Management
Committee, said that the projects are designed to enhance customer experience through the use of artwork and modernist architectural concepts. He also added that the hospital will be more eco-friendly with the addition of palm trees, plants and animals to assist with therapeutic treatment.
The official opening of the Drug Serv Pharmacy was also a part of the functions activities.
The Management of SERHA commends the funding agencies for their continuous contribution in the health sector.
