Services

The Three levels of Health Care Delivery - Primary Care

Primary Care or preventive services where the focus is on maintaining good health and the prevention of disease; Primary Services include:

  • Childhood immunization
  • Family planning
  • Periodic screening tests for cervical, prostate and breast cancer, diabetes and hypertension.
  • The monitoring of environmental conditions (e.g. vectors) to prevent the spread of disease.
  • The promotion of healthy lifestyle habits to prevent obesity.
  • The promotion of responsible sexual behaviour to reduce the number of persons who contract Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI’s) and HIV/AIDS
  • Treatment of common medical disorders and management of uncomplicated chronic disease patients (diabetes, hypertension, etc.)
  • These types of services are offered mainly at Health Centres with limited availability at hospitals

Secondary Care

Secondary Care or Curative services where the focus is on the effective management and control of existing disease, and prevention of the complications of these conditions;
Secondary or Curative services include:

  • Inpatient management of diseases
  • Surgical Caret
  • Accident and Emergency Care

These types of services are usually available only at hospitals.

Tertiary Care

Tertiary Care offers rehabilitative and specialized care for certain conditions. These include the highly specialized services such as:

  • Pediatric and Medical Intensive Care
  • Renal Care unit
  • Neurosurgery care
  • Physiotherapy
  • Radiotherapy and treatment of cancers
  • Acute Psychiatric Care

These are generally available at the Tertiary Referral Centres. These include the KPH, BHC, Hope Institute, Sir John Golding, and Bellevue Hospital.
