The Bustamante Hospital for Children was established in 1963. The hospital has 253 beds and sees approximately 35,887 outpatients and 70,331 casualties per year. The services offered by the Bustamante Hospital for Children include:

• Specialist Services (Medicine): General Medicine, Cardiology, Neurology, Asthma/\Respiratory, Nephrology, Dermatology Rheumatology, Child Guidance, Nutrition, Surgery: General Surgery, Neurosurgery, Orthopedics, Urology, Ears, Nose and Throat (ENT), Plastic and Burns, Ophthalmology, Cardio-thoracic, Dental.
• Accident and Emergency Overnight Suite - accommodates parents overnight; Learning and Activity Centre – A trained teacher is available from 9:00a.m. – 4:00p.m. for ambulatory patients. Assessment Officer – assess and assists patients having difficulties in paying fees.
• Medical Social Worker – provides counseling and access to community services; Research Centre – stimulates publication of clinical research to improve patient care
• Auditory Brain Stem Screening – Hearing assessment conducted by the Jamaica Association for the Deaf.
• Dietary – Provides meals, education and assists with patient care.

Patients can access services by referral by a private doctor or medical institution or by self-referral to casualty, from Monday to Friday, during the hours of 8:00 am to 4:00pm.

Some special equipment used by the hospital in the delivery of its services include Fluoroscopy, C-Arm, Spectrophotometer, Electrolyte machines, Bilirubin machine.

In 2001, the Bustamante Hospital for Children was awarded for being the most Innovative and Creative Agency. In 2002, the hospital established its Ophthalmology Services and commenced Open-Heart Surgery. In the same year, the Operating Theatre and Recovery room were refurbished, the Intensive Care Unit was equipped with ventilators and the Casualty Department was upgraded.

In 2003 the National Chest Hospital was awarded for being the best hospital in the Civil Service Customer Service Competition.
