The Bustamante Hospital for Children (BHC) was established in November 1963 as the
nation’s specialist paediatric hospital when the paediatric ward at the Kingston
Public Hospital was transferred to this location. The facility was formerly the
British Military Hospital and was handed over to the Jamaican government after the
country gained independence in 1962. Bustamante Hospital for Children is the only
specialist children’s hospital in the English speaking Caribbean and caters to
patients from birth to 12 years, providing a comprehensive range of diagnostic,
preventative, curative, rehabilitative and ambulatory services offered in
paediatric medical and surgical specialties and sub-specialties. According to
the 2005 census that population was 693,175.
The Hospital has a bed capacity of 283 including a 5 bed Intensive Care Unit that
provides critical care service to critically ill patients. The Accident and Emergency
department operates on a twenty-four hour basis and sees approximately 77,000
patients per year. In addition, specialist clinics are held five days per week in
the Outpatients’ Department. The psychosocial, educational and recreational
components of paediatric care are addressed through services delivered in the
Medical Social Work Department and a Learning and Activity Centre. An overnight
suite with limited accommodation for parents is also located on the premises.
Since 1963, a lot has been done to improve the infrastructure at the hospital.
In 1991, a major re-development took place, which saw construction of the
Diagnostic Services Block (Radiology and Laboratory), Operating Theatre Suite,
Accident and Emergency Building, Specialist Out-patient Block, 6 Wards, Morgue
and Biomedical Workshop.
The hospital is one of ten within the South East Region, and is managed by the
South East Regional Health Authority. A Chief Executive Officer heads the local
team and is responsible for the day-to-day management of the institution. The
Senior Medical Officer has responsibility for the technical services, and the
Matron is responsible for nursing services. The staff complement of approximately
450 comprises administrative, medical, para-medical, nursing; ancillary and other
support services staff.
